Educational Statement of Need

Why Attend This Symposium
.
The First Annual North American Symposium on Personalized Therapies for Breast Cancer is a completely new concept in symposia for this malignancy.

There is a critical need for providing physicians treating breast cancer and for physicians and researchers designing breast cancer clinical trials with the most up-to-date, scientifically-based and practical information on the various strategies for personalizing therapies for this malignancy. There is a large number of effective drug, radiation and surgical therapies for treating breast cancer. There is also an increasing number of novel molecular diagnostic techniques such as genomics, including gene micro arrays and other gene profiling tests, molecular diagnostics measuring phosphorylation in cell signaling, tests measuring circulating tumor cells, digital mammography, and various other tests to help guide clinicians and researchers to better predict which targeted therapies and chemotherapies will be optimal or ineffective for specific patient sub-populations with breast cancer.

This new symposium brings together a faculty of clinical and scientific experts in therapeutics, and a faculty of expert scientists and clinicians to integrate the relevant molecular diagnostics tests, predictive and prognostic, and surgical procedures into the management of patients with breast cancer. This "personalized approach" is aimed at helping clinicians increase the relative effectiveness of therapies through better patient selection, thus maximizing the use of effective therapies while minimizing the exposure of their patients to avoidable drug toxicities, and minimizing the overall cost of therapy.

This symposium is also intended to help both researchers and pharmaceutical companies design the most optimal clinical trials for the treatment of breast cancer in today's environment where there are rapidly increasing number potential agents for this malignancy and a clinical trials network approaching its capacity.

Description and Format

The First Annual North American Symposium on Personalized Therapies for Breast Cancer will include didactic sessions from numerous key academic clinical and scientific thought leaders. It will allow time for question-and-answer panel discussions, and participant interaction with the expert faculty. Key topics will be discussed and controversial issues debated in multiple, faculty panel discussions.

Target Audience
This symposium is primarily designed for breast cancer medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists, especially in community/private practice. Fellows, nurses, and pharmacists with an interest in the treatment of breast cancer are also invited to attend.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this symposium, you should be able to:

  • Assess the personalized therapeutic approaches for the prevention of breast cancer.
  • Evaluate the impact of molecular classification of breast cancers for personalizing therapies.
  • Evaluate the clinical data regarding the selection of the most appropriate agent for the treatment of bone metastases in the era of personalized therapy approaches for breast cancers.
  • Evaluate the clinical data for personalizing the selection of anti-emetic therapy for breast cancer patients.
  • Analyze the clinical applications of personalized adjuvant and neo-adjuvant therapies for breast cancer.
  • Describe the personalized approaches to local-regional control breast cancer.
  • Devise strategies to incorporate the clinical applications of personalized therapy of breast cancer into the daily management of patients with this malignancy as well as the designing of newer clinical trials for breast cancer.
  • Describe the use of molecular-based techniques in defining prognostic sub-groups in breast cancer clinical trials.
